Asya Johnson, Principal
Longwood Preparatory Academy
Asya Johnson began her career as teacher in 2005 in her hometown of North Philadelphia and later moved to New York in 2007. Mrs. Johnson held several positions at a charter school in Harlem, including principal, before she was hired as our school principal in January 2016. Mrs. Johnson believes that every child can be a scholar and should be given the opportunity to demonstrate their potential in and outside of the classroom. Since Mrs. Johnson joined our school community we have increased the number of community based partnerships, scholarships awarded to graduating seniors and grants for programming at our school.
During the 2016-17 school year, the school was awarded $100,000 to expand the career and technical education programs, $65,000 to offer enrichment and repeat courses on Saturdays and holidays as well as $10,000 grant to build a recording studio and offer hip-hop therapy. As an advocate for diversifying schools and avid fan of Hip-Hop, Mrs. Johnson believes that if provided with the right amount of love, cultural awareness and support at school-any student can be successful.
Currently, Mrs. Johnson is a Doctoral Candidate at Drexel University and is expected to graduate in 2020. She also holds an Ed.M. in Educational Leadership for Change from Bankstreet College; an M.Ed. in Special Education from Holy Family University and a B.A. in English from Delaware State University.
