WHAT IS buildOn?

buildOn is an organization that seeks to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education.

WHAT IS SERVICE AND SERVICE LEARNING?

Service-learning is a form of experience-based education in which students learn content as they engage in activities that address community needs.  Service-learning differs from community service or volunteerism in two major ways: 1) The service activity is integrated with curriculum and content, and 2) Students engage in structured reflection of their service experiences and apply their learning in real-life activities. An effective service-learning project helps students learn and develop through participation in organized service that meets the needs of their communities.

      OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH buildOn

Students have a variety of opportunities to engage in service.

Weekly program meetings

Program meetings occur once a week, during students’ lunch period.  Program meetings are a great space to connect with other buildOn students and learn about upcoming service opportunities.

Ongoing after-school service projects

Ongoing service projects take place once a week and typically last anywhere between 1-3 hours.  Ongoing service projects are a great opportunity to network and build relationships with community partners as well as other volunteers.

Saturday service projects

Saturday service projects vary every week and are a great way to address a variety of challenges affecting the community.  As with ongoing service projects, Saturday service opportunities, are a great way to learn about community partners and network with them.

Trek

Trek is a part of our global program.  Students who are selected to participate on Trek have the opportunity to travel to one of our partner countries; Nicaragua, Haiti, Malawi, Senegal, or Nepal, to help build the foundation of a school.  Students are not only able to participate in the construction of a school but they engage in rich cultural exchange for 10-12 days. During this time, students build relationships with their team and with community members.
